Sri Lanka, the beautiful perl of of the Indian Ocean is my island home. Situated
just above the equator the country is blessed with sunny weather throught the
year. Sri Lanka proudly boasts a variety of flora fauna that can be found in the
divese country side ranging from the luscious rain forests, clear beaches to misty
mountains. Sri Lanka is 65,610 square kilometres in size and has a population
of approximately 18.5 million people. Sri Lanka has a rich recent history extending
to over 2500 years that has created a unique and hospitable culture.
Throughtout history Sri Lanka has been known by names such as Serendib, Ceylon,Island of Dharma, Resplendent Isle, Teardrop of India, Pearl of the Orient and many more, all of which is evidence of the richness and beauty of this colorfull tropical paradise.
Unfortunately Sri Lanka has recently been plagued by a on going civil war that has wrecked serious damage to the countries economy and image as a tourist haven. Luckily most of the violence is limited to the North of the country, leaving much of the country safe to the tired tourist or the experienced explorer.
Sri Lanka is the only haven of Traditional Theravada Buddhism. The buddhist influence has led to the creation of many magnificant atistic and architectural creations and has shaped the life styles of the people.
